The Sprint Event

The University of Arkansas won one of the most exciting sprint finals in Solar Splash history, edging out Cedarville University and the University of South Carolina. Their times were 27.18, 27.74, and 28.45 seconds, respectively.

Qualifying and Slalom were completed today. Teams were given an extra three hours to complete the events because of yesterday's rain delay.

Qualifying and slalom began today - so did the rain. At 2:00 the competition was halted, and the students made the most of the delays.

Registration

Teams registered and unloaded their boats and gear. Skippers were weighed and ballasted if they weighed less than 70 kg. Mechanical and electrical inspections began.

The day ended with a talk from a Wal-Mart representative about environmental issues and a dinner on the lawn in front of Old Main on the University of Arkansas campus.

Tent for eight of the teams

Setting up in a new venue requires planning and creativity. Having some of the Buffalo folks in Fayetteville will help make the transition much easier.

Solar patrol boat

This is the first year for SOLAR SPLASH to be held in Fayetteville. The weather promises to be sunny (or mostly sunny) all week and warm.

« This will also be the first year that we have a solar/electric safety boat. Johnson Controls provided Optima batteries and a Briggs and Stratton electric outboard motor.

Lake depth is less than 25 feet (8 m) for the most part. The lake will be closed to boats other than competition boats beginning on Wednesday. »
